Getting to know you, getting to know me.....

Let's get to know each other first so we can collaborate effectively to help you work through life's problems and set you on a better path. Why I offer the 20-minute free meetup session...

Let me introduce myself. My name is David Rosa, the founder of The Male Room, a counselling service designed especially for men. By way of a brief introduction, let me give you some background of how I got to be here.

After a tough time at school, I went to university and studied Marketing as part of a Business degree. My real passion however was music. I was a songwriter who wanted to change the world. Unfortunately, I was also incredibly shy and lacking in self-confidence - as good a song-writer that I was, the world would never know, as I was terrified to put myself out there to get gigs and do the hard yards, which you had to do in the 80's to be a success in the music biz. So why did I study for a business degree when, with my personality, what I really should have studied was a humanities degree? Well, as payback to my migrant parents who had sacrificed a lot to give me the opportunity for further education they had not had.

I did well in my degree and dually started in a junior Marketing role. I rose quickly through the ranks and had a fairly senior position by the age of thirty. Was I happy about that? No, I loathed it. I discovered that when you start to play with the big boys and girls, corporate politics can be a dirty game and I was shithouse at it. My values were unaligned with those of the people I worked with and for and I could not respect them. So, at the age of thirty, I took a massive risk and abandoned the corporate world and started my own retail coffee roasting business from scratch. It was both terrifying and exhilarating. It was not an overnight success, but we persisted and did well.

After running the coffee roastery for close to 20 years I thought I had everything sorted. The truth was I had sacrificed a lot to get there. I was exhausted, anxious and depressed. I decided I needed some help and started to see a counsellor. This also was not an overnight success. I was referred by my GP to a psychologist who was a few years younger than me. She certainly knew her stuff but we didn't click. I persisted for a few sessions but I found her lack of empathy and understanding difficult to deal with so I stopped going. At the time I was reading John Kirwan's book All Blacks Don't Cry: A Story of Hope about the former Kiwi legend's struggles with mental health while playing rugby at the highest level. One key piece of advice was to persist until you found the right counsellor for you, a person with whom you felt understood. I eventually found my next counsellor at a weekly meditation class that she ran. I started to see her as my counsellor. We clicked, she got me, it worked. With her help, I reassessed my values, my goals and ultimately my life's purpose. A few years later I decided to sell my coffee business and re-train as a counsellor myself after encouragement from my own counsellor!

So this is why I offer the 20-minute free meetup session - so you can decide if I'm the right person to help you. What have you got to lose bar 20 minutes of your time? Let's chat, and see where it goes!
